Cross Winds

Cross Winds
At moment it is very windy around Milton keynes. If you are out driving remember that cross winds are dangerous.
You could encounter a cross wind when driving along a road that has been protected by trees and becomes more open flat fields, or if you pass a large HGV.
This is where the wind will push against the side of the car causing it to move to either left or right. If you are expecting it could happen then keep a firm grip of the steering wheel and readjust the car back into the centre of your lane. If you are passing a large HGV then give it a bit more space and try not to stay in its blind spot for too long.www.drive-travis.co.uk

Top Tips after you have passed the driving test.

Top Tips after you have passed the driving test.
1 Remember when you were learning and the other drivers did not signal on roundabouts and every time you said "I would of gone then, if they only signalled." Do not forget to Mirrors then signal your intentions.
2 The DSA has passed you because you have reached the standard. Keep doing what you have been taught.
3 When you first go out in your own car for the first couple of times keep it to short and simple drives. It will feel strange, your instructor not being next to you.
4 Resist being a taxi for your friends for the first month until you are more confident to have friends in the car.
5 Remember you passed because you can drive to a good standard and safe. Don't try and copy other drivers.
6 At the end of each drive take a moment to reflect on your driving. Be honest with yourself. Was it good, did you take any silly risks. Try to improve.
7 If you are confused about a roundabout or a new road layout. Then ask for advise. Either post a question on my page or text me or ask a parent. You are not alone.
8 It took me about two years after I passed my driving test to fully understand a lot of different roads. So don't consider yourself the leading expert after one week.
9 When parking in a car park for the first time go to the quiet area to park until you are more confident.
10 Don't be rushed into making choices, remember keep it simple and do it early.
11 Remember you are responsible for who is in your car. If they have not got the seat belt on, they you are also liable.
12 It has cost a lot of time and money to pass the driving test. As a new driver if you get 6 points or more in the first two years of driving you will revert back to a learner driver and have to retake the driving test again.

Which manoeuvre will I get for my driving test?

That's a good question.  The answer is you will not know until the examiner asks you to complete one. I have listed below my last ten pupil driving tests and the manoeuvres that they was asked.
This is a list of my last ten driving test manoeuvres
1 Bay park
2 Reverse park
3 Reverse park
4 Left reverse
5 Left reverse
6 Bay park
7 Turn in the road
8 Bay park
9 Reverse park
10 Left reverse

As you can see it could be any of the four that your driving instructor should be teaching you.

107 ATTEMPTS TO PASS THE THEORY TEST.

107 ATTEMPTS TO PASS THE THEORY TEST.
A hapless unnamed 28year old, from London, has spent so far £3,317 trying to pass the theory test, at a cost of £31 each- a record 107 attempts.

The Theory Test

Theory Test
The first part of the Theory Test consists of 50 multiple choice questions.  Each question has 4 possible answers of which only 1 is correct.
You are allowed 57 minutes to complete the test in which you must correctly answer 43 questions out of 50 to pass.
The Hazard Perception section of the test is made up of 14 hazard video clips.
You have 15 hazards to spot.  Once you have found each hazard you must click on the mouse. You will need to score 44 or more out of 75 to pass.

You will need to pass both the theory questions and the hazard perception section of the test at the same sitting to pass.
You CANNOT book your Practical driving test UNTIL you have passed the theory test and hazard perception test.
From 2012 the multiple choice questions and answers used in theory tests will no longer be made public.
This is designed to help ensure that new drivers learn the principles behind driving theory rather than just learning answers.
In September 2011 DSA will change the format of books and other learning materials available to help people prepare for theory tests, at the same time as more challenging case studies are introduced to car theory tests.
Then, from 1st January 2012, DSA will create theory tests using questions which will not be published.
Practice questions and answers, not used in the actual theory tests, will still be available to help candidates with revision.

Practical Test
The driving test lasts just under 40 minutes and will cover a wide variety of roads including dual carriageways, town centre, rural roads, and villages.  You will be asked to complete one manoeuver from:
  • Reverse parking into a parking space
  • Turn in the road
  • Reverse around a corner
  • Reverse parking on the road behind a parked car
1 in 3 pupils might be asked to demonstrate an emergency stop when signalled by your examiner.

Independent Driving
Independent driving is also included within the 40 minutes of the practical driving test. The indepentdent driving will last upto 10 minutes.

How long will it take me to pass my driving test?

How long will it take me to pass my driving test?

That's a very good question but hard to give you an amount in hours from start of your training to passing your test.
The reason is not two people are the same.

Example 1  (15 to 25 hours)
never driven before and from first lesson picks up everything straight away and passes first time.
This sounds great but only a small percentage of pupils are like this.

Example 2  (25 to 45 hours)
never driven before and from first lesson learns most things after a couple of times and passes on first attempt.   Most people fall into this area.

Example 3  (45 to 60 hours)
never driven before and from day one will struggle but with regular lessons and encouragement will pass first time.  Only a small amount of people fall into this area.

Everybody is different.

The DSA states that it will on average take todays pupil about 45 hours of professional  driving lessons and 20 hours of lessons in your parents car to reach the standard of driving that is required to pass the test.

50 years of driving and going strong

Assessment Lesson
Today I met up with a 80 year old lady who wanted me to assess her driving ability. She had been driving for over 50 years ( before I was born). The assessment went very well.

But it got me thinking about my current pupils who are just starting out on there own driving journey of life. In 50 years from now will they be asking an instructor to be assessed to see if they are still up to the standard to drive safely.

After you pass the practical driving test it is a continuous learning curve.
The advise that I will give is you are never too old to learn.
You could even push yourself to become better at driving and take a course of lessons on pass plus or how to drive on motorways or even take lessons with the Institute of advanced motorists.
The choice is yours.
